The teacher I interviewed feels that teaching and learning in a safe environment is very crucial and important. So, the area that I will be working on with be social/emotional development. Learning in a safe environment deals a lot social/emotional development and how the children think and how they will react. Questions I have for my colleagues are do they think this area of interest is strong and important?
Thanks
Ramonalisa, It is so important to keep our children in a safe enivroment and away from all harm. Keeping children safe involves three essential components: education, supervision, and environment. We can teach children about safety such as reminding them to walk not run inside the building, and providing close adult supervision. Creating a safe environment for young children is most important. we must create a environment that allows children to move and play freely and safely so that they can learn.
ReplyDeleteHi Ramonalisa!
ReplyDeleteI absoloutely love your topic! I have to agree with you that it is extrememly important to create a safe environment for our children. After the Sandy Hook shooting, I was scared to death to send my children to school. And right after that happened, their school was on lock-down for something happening in the area. I was so ready to leave work and go get them. I don't like having to live in fear everday, while my kids are at school, thinking that they might not come home.
B Bennet, I think that I am going to change my topic from a safe environment for children, to child abuse prevention. I am deciding to do this, because I had personal experience with a child at my old center that I believe was involved in this. I wasn't sure, so I left it in my director's hand to do what was best. If, I seen more evidence I would have called it in to the proper authorities.
ReplyDeleteChristy Lamacki, I like my topic too, but I think that I have more knowledge and hands on experience with the child abuse topic. I believe that this is a important field, and a lot of this is going untalked about or undocumented. The child is scared to talk about this for numerous of reasons.
Thank you both
That's a great topic. It sad that so many times as teachers we feel think something is going on with a child in their home and can't prove it. It can be hard to deal with sometimes. I feel that we coukld do more as teachers with the right support and parent education. The Department of Children and Family Services in my area have cut staff so much that many times call that are made to the hotline are unfounded and know somehing happened. The department is also trying to work really hard to keep the family unit together and not split it up. They feel that this approach will protect the family and the child and will use parents education and monitoring systems instead. This sounds good, but in reality the department is under staffed and under support.
ReplyDeleteRomanalisa,
ReplyDeleteI think that the topic of making sure that children are in a safe environment is a great idea. I also like that while you were doing your research you decide to focus it on child abuse. I believe that the two topics actually go well together. Children that are abused need to know that they can have somewhere safe to go when they feel that they have no control of the situation they are in. I am looking forward to reading more on your topic, good luck.
Hello Ramonalisa,
ReplyDeleteWith reference to safe environments it is our job as parents and educators to ensure that our children learn in a safe environment. Bullying is prevalent, as well as some sick people trying to harm others. The issues that I mentioned can also be a part of safe environments. There is a strong need children to learn in a safe environment.
As an advocate for children in safe environments you have the task of informing parents, families, and educators of your findings with reference to safety. There are some systems put in place however there are so many people seeking these services that there is deffinately a need for you and others to advocate for our children.
Hello Ramonalisa,
ReplyDeleteIt is very important for students to feel safe at school, if nowhere else. This is suppose to be a safe haven, learning environment for students. If children do not feel safe at school, of course, they are not going to attend, or if they are attending, they are not focused on lessons being taught. I believe this is an issue that not only educators need to address, it need to be address by the community as well. This is a very timely topic that you chose to advocate about considering all the violence that is taking place in or around schools and with our students. Are you going to address the issue of bullying in your advocacy paper?
